Colette, The Hand

"The Hand"

This story was about a newly wed wife who has found something wrong about her seemingly perfect husband.  The something she found, to me, was so small and petite, but to her it was the fact that she found something she disliked. I think the story was good, and it had a hidden message in it . I think this story was about over coming a small obstacle in a marriage. The thing that stood out to me the most that the author did was the way she didn't have the wife explain the story, She had a narrator explain. Which gave the story a little suspense. Also the scene of the story, even tho there was not much to it, was described very good. I think she did a good job describing a setting a full imagine in the readers head in less then two pages. It was a short story but it was like you read a full novel. You got a the complete image in your head by the end of the story. Do you think the wife is overly picky and tries to find petite things ? Do you think the wife kissing her husbands hand at the end of the story was a test to her self to see if she could deal with it?

  1. Although I had some issues with the story, as you pointed out, I liked that it came from the viewpoint of a narrator and not the bride herself.
The setting made the reader realize that this young girl came from her parent's home, into her husband's home, and perhaps was not prepared or mature enough yet for marriage. She married with the hope and dreams of most new brides, only to realize that marriage is not perfect and is full of sacrifice. I think her kissing her husband's hand symbolized the resignation she had in fulfilling her duties as a wife, even if it meant giving up her own wants and needs and giving into subjection by her husband.
